The world might be under pressure, but optimism persists. A novel accolade from the science, music and arts festival the Starmus festival will motivate the public to make a difference.

The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will honor in memory of the celebrated British primatologist who died this year. It will recognise individuals and groups that champion the natural world.

Award Details

The inaugural winners will be revealed at the upcoming Starmus event in Tenerife and La Palma, which will run from 17–22 October the coming year.

It was shared that Goodall, who was a Starmus advisory board member, had endorsed the award’s creation. “The vision behind this medal, and Starmus being entrusted with organising it, is Jane’s,” a statement said. “Her desire was that she wanted this to happen. This is likely because of the unique bond she had with us.”

“This medal will recognize sustainable programmes carried out to build an environment a better place for all living beings and ecosystems and foster motivation to continue such efforts,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

A co-founder of the festival indicated that the medal – unveiled at a prestigious venue – would probably encompass various fields.

“It will be modeled after the Stephen Hawking medal for science communication established a decade past,” he explained. Jane Goodall herself received of that award.

Expressing concern about the future for Earth, one figure stated, “Frankly, it's challenging to be optimistic. Certain policies in one major nation is conducting a dismissal of evidence. This situation really cripples global initiatives.”

“In truth, things don’t look very good so we have to commence thinking again, much more seriously about the consequences of human activity. This concern encompasses not just climate change, that’s the whole way that we treat nature.”

Inspiring Change

As a result, observers believe this is an opportune moment to honor her guiding principles. “I think that when we’re awarding the prize, we will be considering this core philosophy of Jane’s – which made her foremost concern, to change how we regard wildlife around us.”

A major topic at present was highlighted of false information. The focus of next year’s festival is set as “the search for truth”.

“There is a recognition that factual reality has become contested when politics are involved. This is an alarming trend,” it was said. “The science of climate remains a scientific discipline; it is impossible to allow interference from politics in climate science.”

Hope and Determination

The hope is that this honor will spur concrete steps. “It’s about inspiring individuals to get involved and to care and to strive toward these goals, truly. Whether or not we’re optimistic, we must focus on doing all that is possible,” it was added. “Accept the possibility of setbacks, but you still continue striving toward success.”

A descendant engaged in environmental protection expressed optimism that “with guidance and once enabled, humans can be responsible caretakers of our planet”, citing the programs of a foundation which, among its other activities, helps the youth get involved with their community, animals, and environment.

“As my late grandmother constantly reminded us, the choices we make each day make a difference and the responsibility lies with us what type of impact we choose to create,” it was stated. “We still have an opportunity and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will provide inspiration and increase understanding regarding beneficial initiatives that people are making.”
