The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
